You, as the owner of your vehicle, are legally obliged to dispose of it subject to Environment Agency 'End-of-Life' or ELV regulations.

All vehicles destined for scrap also require a DVLA Certificate of Destruction. We do all this for you and issue the official paperwork.

The Vehicle Recycling Process

Once Swindon Metal Recycling has removed your scrap car it is taken to our recycling centre in Swindon, Wiltshire. From there several steps are taken to process your old car.

Vehicle De-Pollution

All volatile substances are removed from the vehicle including acids, brake and hydraulic fluid, oil, brake pads, and coolants are drained and separated into vats.

Some fluids such as engine oil are reused as heating oil, other liquids such as brake fluid can be refined and reused. However some fluids cannot be reused and are collected and taken to a licenced depot for safe disposal.

As most people know, oil is an especially valuable Earth resource and is currently at it's highest ever price. Oil drilling is also one of the Earth's most polluting activities. We make every effort to make sure it is recycled and reused as environmentally responsibly as possible.

Recycling Spare Parts

If some parts of the vehicle are salvageable and are good enough to re-use we remove them, recondition them and sell them for spare parts to garages and private motor mechanics using our partner site Swindon Car Parts or via eBay.

Re-using car parts saves money on buying newly manufactured parts. Sometimes they are also not available from the car manufacturer or any other source and so can be quite valuable items. Recycling

Each part of the vehicle is removed and separated into it's constituent materials ready to be milled, shredded and then either reformed into to it's original state e.g. steel or used to create new materials. This is done at our metal recycling centre in Swindon, Wiltshire.

Recycling metal costs around 30% of the cost of mining and smelting new metal. Metal production also greatly impacts on the environment. Recycling metal is just as good quality as new metal and is often used to make new cars. Metal can be recycled over and over again. Recycled metal currently represents up to 30% of the total worldwide metal production and has become an important industrial resource. New cars are designed with recycling in mind so that the maximum metal can be reused when they come to the end of their life.

Recycling Glass is another material that can be reused over and over again once it has had any impurities and plastic laminates removed. It can be used for new automotive glass or reprocessed for other uses such as building materials and paving.

There are many types of plastic used in car production. At Swindon Metal Recycling each type is seperated and either milled down and/or directly remoulded to produce parts for new cars or just about anything you can think of. Rubber, especially tyres are an expensive Earth resource and also an environmental nuisance when disposed of in landfill sites, in fact it is illegal under EU law to put tyres into landfill. Tyres can be recycled or retreaded, also other rubber based car parts such as door extrusions and window seals can be reprocessed by Swindon Metal Recycling to make new rubber items. Around 50 million tyres are replaced on vehicles every year in the UK only. That's 5 over million tyres in Wiltshire alone. Recycling tyres is an important environmental process.

As well as steel, catalytic converters contain other types of precious metal such as rhodium,platinum and palladium which can be extracted and reused to make new catalytic converters. Swindon Metal Recycling is aware of the value of these precious recycling elements.

Swindon Metal Recycling recycles car batteries down into their constituent parts, mainly lead and plastic which is milled or melted down to produce new batteries. Battery acid, or distilled water cannot be reused due to the high impurities and so that is collected and taken for safe disposal at a licenced Wiltshire Council depot.
